Heavy vehicles prohibited to travel on OMR during peak hours

Heavy vehicles prohibited in OMR

Traffic in OMR can be a headache for commuters especially in signals like Thiruvanmiyur, tidel park and Sholinganallur signals. With over a lakh of vehicles travelling the IT Corridor daily this poses a big challenge to the traffic police to control the flow of traffic. Chennai traffic police had already come up with initiatives like allowing only left turn in Sholinganallur signal to solve this problem. (Traffic changes in Shollinganallur signal). The Government of Tamilnadu is also planning on proposals like constructing an elevated corridor on the stretch. This will ease traffic to a great deal. But as of now , the immediate problem needs to be addressed.

With this in mind , Chennai traffic police has come up with a new rule to control the traffic flow. As per the new rule, heavy vehicles like trucks cannot travel in Old mahabalipuram road from 8 am to 11 pm here upon. This time slot will be used by office commuters who form the bulk of the commuting population on OMR with around 6000 company buses using the stretch daily. Hope this  solves the traffic woes to some extent and allows commuters to take a smooth ride.

  1. When i approached OMR toll plaza office for LRP they said the rule
You must show utility bill (EB BILL, TELEPHONE BILL).
How come a person shifted to nearby toll area as local resident will show this?
Adhar card not accepted here as an identity proof - why?
To get a LRP we must then wait for a month and spend the hard money to cross the toll every time?

Bus stops @ OMR

OMR is almost a straight highway, taking a bus ride can be smooth except at few junctions like Tidel park and Shollinganallur.Though MTC offers nearly 400 trips a day, buses are often crowded. The hot sun adds to the uneasiness. There are a few AC buses though mostly taken by IT professionals working in software companies situated along the IT corridor.                                         To take these bus rides, commuters have to wait at bus stops situated along the road. There are 23 major bus stops as of now and two routes , one from Adyar to Kelambakkam and the other from Velachery to Kelambakkam. Both these routes meet at SRP tools.
