A Cleaner OMR, A Cleaner Chennai

Any idea of how many tonnes of garbage is generated in Chennai everyday ? 5000 TONNES says 'The Hindu'. Every major restaurant generates 1 tonne of waste every day the article says.Food is considered sacrilegious  in our culture.Yet food wastage contributes to the major amount of garbage collected in the city.Chennai though called Singara Chennai does not really match to its name. Unclean roads and garbage are a daily sight. Why can't Chennai be as clean as Singapore? What as a Chennaite can we contribute for a cleaner city? What as a OMR Rider can we contribute to this?

Pallikaranai along OMR is a major garbage dump yard for the city. Though it hosts more birds than Vedanthangal , it also hosts more garbage driving away the birds and other species inhabiting the marshland.OMR is not clean either , an IT highway hosting major of our country's software companies would look great if it is cleaner and well maintained. All this requires some initiatives.

The Hindu has come up with an initiative for a cleaner Chennai with the tag 'My Chennai My Right'. Chennaites are requested to send photographs of garbage affecting normal life and can also write to them about what can be done to manage waste.

Through initiatives like this, we can create an awareness and probably inch towards making Chennai a cleaner city ,a Singara Chennai.

As an OMR Rider let us do our bit to make OMR clean. Please send in your photographs/comments if you are interested to The Hindu

Lets have a cleaner ride!

Bus stops @ OMR

OMR is almost a straight highway, taking a bus ride can be smooth except at few junctions like Tidel park and Shollinganallur.Though MTC offers nearly 400 trips a day, buses are often crowded. The hot sun adds to the uneasiness. There are a few AC buses though mostly taken by IT professionals working in software companies situated along the IT corridor.                                         To take these bus rides, commuters have to wait at bus stops situated along the road. There are 23 major bus stops as of now and two routes , one from Adyar to Kelambakkam and the other from Velachery to Kelambakkam. Both these routes meet at SRP tools.
